What is the Sovereign Order?
The Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller, is a Christian, chivalric, ecumenical and international community of members, who continue a nearly 1000 year tradition of helping the sick and poor of all nationalities, races and creeds.
Our Rich History
Our story begins in 1023AD when merchants from Amalfi, Italy began planning a hospital dedicated to St. John the Baptist, in Jerusalem, the site of Jesus’ death and resurrection.
The Hospital of St. John opened circe 1048AD and this marked the founding of both the hospital and of the organization that ran it, the Order of St. John, also known as the Knights Hospitaller.
Our Global Reach
The Sovereign Order today has Commanderies, Priories and Grand Priories throughout Europe, North American and Australasia, with our international headquarters in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Our global membership is a direct result of the growing need to help the less fortunate in our communities.
Our Work Around the World
From funding hospices in British Columbia, to building housing for developmentally challenges adults in California, to operating centres for at-risk youth and the homeless in France, to support programs for youth who face social challenges…
